FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MY DICTIONARY, MY FUTURE SPELLING BEE COMPETITION

Through the initiated based research it was evaluated that our government provides learners from primary and secondary schools with free prescribed CAPS textbooks, however, there is one resource that they do not provide which is the ENGLISH DICTIONARY. A lot of public schools, especially learners who study English as First Additional Language (FAL), find it difficult to speak, read and learn the English language.

The vital reason why learners, particularly those from foundation and intermediate phase, find it difficult to learn and adjust to English quickly is due to the lack of resources and their background. Hence it is said that learning comes in three forms namely: reading; speaking; and listening.

Elex Foundation, in association with Elex Academic Bookstore, is running a campaign called My Dictionary, My Future "Give a child a dictionary", whereby all learners from Grade R - 7 will be provided with prescribed dictionaries. At this point in time, Elex Academic Bookstore is in the process of donating dictionaries beginning from grade R - 7 to 37 Hammanskraal primary schools.

The Essence of This Campaign

The purpose of this campaign (My Dictionary, My Future) is to encourage learners to use the dictionary, at home and at school, so that they will be able to learn as many words as possible the English dictionary has to offer. This includes spelling and grammar, and since English is the medium of communication, it will put the learners at an advantage by paving the way of knowing the English language, and this will enhance the learner’s ability to construct sentences and enable them to use the words they learn in sentences when and while speaking the language.

Tshwane North District (Gauteng) has granted permission to Elex Academic Bookstore to present and supply learners with prescribed dictionaries.

The Cherry On Top

To ensure that the learners utilise the dictionaries, Elex Foundation and Elex Academic Bookstore will host a Spelling Bee Competition for all the primary schools mentioned in the above district areas and the competition will accommodate learners from grade 4 – 7, and as such, the learners will enter the Spelling Bee competition free of charge. The Spelling Bee Competition is scheduled to take place on 5 August 2017 at Sebothoma Hall (Temba) from 08:00 – 14:00.

Prizes to be given away

  • First round participants – stationery.
  • Second round participants – certificate and a voucher from ETEM for R300.
  • Third round participants (one winner per grade) – certificate, laptop, trophy, voucher from ETEM for R1000 and a R5000 cash prize to the primary school.

Tshwane North District is working hand in hand with Elex Academic Bookstore to ensure:

  • All learners will be part of this initiative without incurring any cost.
  • Panelists from cluster 2 (round 2) will be appointed from Tshwane North District until the end of the competition.
  • All English teachers assist learners.
  • Language facilitators will evaluate the words that will be set for the Spelling Bee Competition.
  • Spelling Bee competition rules and regulations will be set by Tshwane North District as well Elex Academic Bookstore.
