Tane’s Heritage Day Celebration

Heritage day is one of the newest and declared public holidays in South Africa which have recently been named the National Braai Day, where the country as a whole celebrate its own diversity and values. Recently, Tane Primary School hosted their annual heritage celebration that took place at Surman village which is located in the heart of Hammanskraal north of Pretoria. Learners and teachers from different cultural groups gathered at the school dressed in different traditional attires representing their own native cultures.

The event started around 11am with Ms Mokhara opening the service with a prayer and Mr G Maremo the school principal giving a brief speech about the importance of the day and what the day stands for. The first performances of the day where from the Grade R cultural dancers followed by Grade 1 cultural dancers to Grade 5 cultural dancers. After each cultural dance Amogelang Mokonyani, Koketso Mthombeni, Karabo Mohla and Mirriam Mosetlhe all gave poems in different cultural languages among them was Tshivenda language. After all the performances the debate team gave an opposing argument between the importance of learning in their own home languages in all their school subjects and the importance of learners being thought in English in all the subjects. In closing Mr Z.K Dlamini gave a vote of thanks and the day’s announcement, the learners were then instructed to go back to their classes where their reports where going to be issued. According to one of the teachers learners gave an outstanding performance and they have showed their best and produced best results for the term.
