The Road to Democracy in South Africa Volume 5 Part 2, African Solidarity focuses on the historical significance of African solidarity in the struggle for national liberation. This volume challenges a notion – and widely shared prejudice – that permeates South African historiography: that while South Africa is geographically on the African continent, its history is integral not to the continent but to its European colonial powers. African Solidarity debunks this offshore-island view about South Africa in Africa. It offers a critical analysis of the relationship between the Organisation of African Unity and the South African liberation movements, the ANC and the PAC. Fraternal ties that bound these liberation movements to countries such as Ghana, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana, Algeria, Lesotho, Nigeria, Egypt, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Angola are highlighted.
