In the early morning when Phumlani realised that his mother had died just as she said she would, he gently removed the soft leather pouch from her cold body and tied it round his hips. All her life,  the pouch was her most precious possession. Now it was his to treasure...

On his way to his uncle in East London, Phumlani meets Justin, who is running away from his uncle. Together the unlikely pair sets out on foot along the beautiful Eastern Cape coast, sharing their adventures, their  meagre food supplies and their fear of Casey in his sleek, silver Mercedes - Casey, who seems to be ominously present wherever they go or try to hide.

For Phumlani, the pouch is always there to comfort him, and the knowledge that his mother would have wanted him to survive. And Justin is there too, although he at first resented the city boy's presence.

This story of friendship, adventure and sharing has strong links with the history of the Eastern Cape. It was written by award-winning novelist, Beryl Bowie who lives in East London. It is suitable for youths of all ages, even for those who have long since left school.
