zibongo zamakhosi are traditional praise poems used to honor chiefs for how they lead their people. They describe the chief's character, leadership abilities, strengths and weaknesses. By following the izibongo, one can understand how the people lived under that chief and the military successes or failures of their armies. Izibongo use parallelism, repetition of words, and metaphorical language to vividly capture the essence of the chief and events of their rule. They were performed at celebrations, when armies returned from battle, and other important occasions to remember the chief.
