Youthful desires for prosperity, love and a purpose in life are undermined for Chinodya's characters as they grow up. The disappointments they face reflect a wider disillusionment and decline in post-independence Zimbabwe. In the final story, "Can We Talk," cynicism turns to anger at the breakdown of a marriage.
