Since the first land grants were given to settlers in 1657, the Afrikaner has been closely associated with the concept of the farm and the land. This book delves into the relationship between white settlers and farming, and later between the Afrikaner, land, and the farm. It also explores the potential development of an Afrikaner identity as a result of this connection. The question is posed: what will become of this identity when the new Land Reform Act reallocates land previously owned by white farmers? Can "identity" still hold any absolute value in the postmodern era? While the author uses the Afrikaans farm novel as a starting point for this exploration, the book is not a conventional literary analysis. Instead, literature is read as a part of the history of Afrikaner consciousness and as a contributing factor in its formation.
